Obituary

Tony Craig Roisum, M.D.

May 16th, 1959 - December 16th, 2023

Tony Craig Roisum, born May 16, 1959, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away surrounded by family on December 16, 2023, as a result of Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

An open house to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, December 23, 2023, at The DEC (Downtown Event Center), 480 Park Avenue, from 2-4 p.m.

Tony was ornery, prickly, never sorry, and he didn’t like anyone. If you thought you were his friend, you’re wrong. Boom, roasted!

Teasing aside, Tony was a caring and dedicated son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, physician, and friend. He was extremely hard working, stoic, determined, driven, competitive, reliable, and never too sick to work (or golf).

His hobbies consisted of watching, coaching, and participating in almost every sport you can think of, including, but not limited to, racing to the airport, wrestling his kids, dodging toys thrown at him by his grandkids, and refereeing his wife’s credit card purchases! Oh, and also golf, hockey, football, basketball, baseball, swimming, and tennis. One of his favorite sports to play was golf. He was constantly competing in tournaments and even claimed to win a few. He was an avid reader, world traveler, and loved spending time with his family—especially his wife, Shellie.

Growing up, he enjoyed his mother’s home cooked meals, worked alongside his brothers with their dad, and rarely missed an opportunity to razz his sisters. He was a good kid who made his parents proud, except for the occasional mischief, like sneaking through the fence at the race track or accidentally catching the neighbors garage on fire.

In his youth, he and his family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and after graduating from Grand Forks Central High School, he left home to serve the people of Sydney, Australia, as a church missionary. He returned home and began his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University where he met and married the love of his life. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish, quickly followed by the arrival of their first child, Craig. While Tony earned his medical degree from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine, Shellie delivered their second child, Bradley, followed by Amber two years later.

After finishing medical school, Tony went on to complete a family practice residency through the University of Utah at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah, where Shellie birthed Eric. Chris joins the family the day before moving to Birmingham, Alabama, for Tony’s fellowship at Health South Medical. At the same time, he worked as a doctor for the minor league Birmingham Barons baseball and Grambling State University football teams traveling the country on the weekends. He was recruited to Houston, Texas, where he practiced sports medicine, orthopedics, family medicine, was a team doctor for Cy-Fair and Nimitz High School football, and Holly was born.

To be closer to Shellie’s family, they traded the Houston heat for the much “cooler” city of Idaho Falls. Fulfilling their goal, Tony and Shellie established Idaho Falls Family & Sports Medicine where they enjoyed a career serving the members of the Idaho Falls community and surrounding area. In conjunction with seeing patients at his office, he also cared for people at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Mountain View Hospital, multiple long-term care facilities, and high school and local sporting events. Even with his busy schedule, he always made time to fulfill his assignments for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He proudly worked to his dying day — studying and completing Continuing Medical Education during his cancer treatment. Tony’s practice, Idaho Falls Family & Sports Medicine, remains open under the care of his presiding Physician Assistants and staff.

Tony was truly an accomplished man and left a positive impact on the world. He was humble, but found ways to live large with the people he loved most. He was high achieving, stubborn, and funny. He loved Crispix, peanut butter toast, and stocking his truck with any complimentary drinks he could find. If it wasn’t his idea, was it even an idea? He would be miffed if we didn’t mention his Pinewood Derby victory, his college football championship ring, and the fact that he made it to MOST of his children’s births. Boom, roasted again.

He will be forever missed and remembered. We love you, Dad.

Tony is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Harriet Roisum; father-in-law, Harvey B. Ward; brother-in-law, Harvey J. Ward; brother-in-law, Jeff Moore; and son-in-law, Ethan Moedl.
