James “Jim” Kondel

James “Jim” Daniel Kondel, 79, of Idaho Falls, passed away quietly December 21, 2023, at his home. He was under the care of Enhabit Hospice.

A quiet, unassuming and loving family man, Jim was adored and cherished by all that knew him well and will be deeply missed.

Jim was born September 24, 1944, in Owosso, Michigan, to Anthony Valentine Kondel and Anna Mary Horvath Kondel. He grew up and attended schools in Owosso, Michigan, and graduated from Durand High School in Durand, Michigan, before working at General Motors. He soon joined the US Navy during the height of the Vietnam war serving two tours of duty. Jim was proud to serve his country from 1965 to 1971 as part of the first era of “nukes” or nuclear electricians and operators for the US Navy, stationed on the USS Long Beach nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser.

In 1967, he married Julia “Julie” Lang to whom he was sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Jim and Julie made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where Jim worked as a union electrician and small business owner.

Jim was loyal, kind, and is oft remembered for his quiet and selfless service to neighbors and family. He loved his home and his garden and enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking, scouting, and football. He grew to love watching BYU sports and was a forever fan of the Detroit Lions, for better or for worse. Go Lions!

Jim is survived by his loving wife of over 56 years, Julie Kondel of Idaho Falls, ID; son, Shawn Kondel of Roy, UT; daughter, Karianna Kondel of Lehi, UT; son, Jeff (Karrie) Kondel of Burley, ID; son, Neal (Karri) Kondel of Highland, UT; daughter, Katie (Kevin) Anderson of North Salt Lake, UT; son, Dan (Michelle) Kondel of Lehi, UT; brother, Tony (Barb) Kondel of Corunna, MI; brother, Cy Kondel of Gaines, MI; sister, Barb (Tom) Walsh of Punta Gorda, FL; brother, Richard (Jan) Kondel of Fenton, MI; seventeen grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
