Elma Jean Hansen Smith

Elma Jean Hansen Smith, 88, of Ammon, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

Elma Jean was born on September 6, 1935, in Thornton, Idaho to Alma and Rose Hansen. She was the youngest of 6 children. She grew up in Thornton and graduated from Madison High School. Following high school graduation, she attended Idaho Falls Business College where she received a certificate in stenography, but more importantly, that is where she met her husband, Glenn LaMar Smith.

After a 6-month courtship, Elma Jean and Glenn were married on August 19, 1955, in the Idaho Falls Temple. They moved to Ammon, Idaho where she lived for the remainder of her life.

Elma Jean was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in many church callings including primary and Cub Scouts.

Elma Jean was a talented seamstress and sewed most of the clothing for her children when they were young. She worked for many years at a fabric store in Idaho Falls and also sewed custom draperies and home decor professionally. She loved to do crafts, quilt, crochet, knit and do needlework.

She was a kind and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and daughter Lynnette.

She is survived by her husband, Glenn; sons: Robert (Lisa) and Rodney (Kris); daughters: Jana (Ron), Susan (Gordon), Lori (Dave), Melanie (Sean), and Michelle; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at the Quail Ridge 1st Ward, 2200 Stafford Dr., Ammon. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., on Monday, January 8, 2024, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
